My Maryland Journal
18 Jul, 2015
Our travels have brought
us all around the "lower 48". We've tried to zip zag and circle
through and around every state we could. Florida was where this endeavor
started.
Enjoy your journal.
Thank you for taking this
wonderful journey with us. It has been absolutely incredible.
Photographs are available
on the Pambling Roads Blog. Please keep in mind that some museums don’t allow
photography.

Maryland
Rockville
Rockville was more of a
pit stop so we could visit my aunt who lives in Sykesville. We were pleasantly
surprised and will stay longer when we return to the area. We stayed at
the Best Western on West Montgomery. It was a great stay, tremendous
breathtaking view, and an onsite restaurant. My husband thoroughly enjoyed
their breakfast selection. The employees were happy, smiling, joking with each
other, customers and at the same time were able to conduct their jobs
thoroughly and professionally.
While we were in
Sykesville, we even got to see our very first groundhog!
Callaway's
Restaurant serves pizza, wings, salads, beer, and wine with a smile and
excellent service.
Westminster
Maryland was a driving
tour for us. It was a nice relaxing ride through the mountains, farming area,
and hills with breath-taking scenery.
We stopped by the
visitor’s center and drove around the historic district, which has a
smorgasbord of different architectural buildings.
Several notable buildings
would be the McDaniel College, the Western Maryland Railroad, the Crouse home,
Odd Fellows Hall, the Shellman House, and of course, the Kimmey House. They’re
all within walking distance of each other.
In the Courthouse Square,
you’ll find several noteworthy homes and churches along East Main Street and
North Court Street. The Kimmey House is the oldest house in the Square. It’s
now the office for the Historical Society of Carroll County. The employees
at the visitor center were pleasant, informative, and welcoming.
Corbit’s Charge
There was a battle here.
Corbit’s Charge, in 1863, has some fascinating history attached to it. It’s a
self-guided tour that gives a multitude of information on the Civil War
skirmish.
Captain Corbit had been
given misinformation and ordered a charge through Westminster, only to be
thwarted by a large unit of General Stuart’s cavalry.
Unfortunately, the photos
we took were blurry but their website offers great pictures for you to see.
The Kimmey House
Built in 1800, it’s the
oldest house on the Court House Square walking tour. There’s an exhibit inside
the house with various historic items.
The Shellman House was
scheduled for demolition and saved by the Historic Society. All tours are by
appointment only.
